When struggling with addiction or a mental health disorder, reaching out for professional help can be daunting. But know this: the choices you make now will shape the rest of your life. If you’re looking for greater health and happiness, getting help is the first step on your journey toward becoming a better you, and there are a variety of different recovery programs designed to help you succeed.

Below, you’ll find more information about the different recovery programs available to you, and how they can help you take back control of your health and happiness.

Residential, Outpatient, and Group Counseling Programs

Residential treatment programs are designed for individuals who struggle with severe addiction or debilitating mental health disorders. In the majority of recovery centers, these programs are separated into short-term treatment and long-term treatment.

In a long-term treatment program, individuals have supervised care available to them 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Generally, these programs exist outside of a hospital setting and last anywhere from six to 12 months. The overarching goal of long-term treatment is the development of healthy new habits and beliefs. These will allow affected individuals to achieve long-term recovery.

In a short-term treatment program, individuals typically follow a modified 12-step recovery approach that may last anywhere from a few days to an entire month. Depending on the program, individuals may undergo a short hospital stay to detox, after which they’ll participate in outpatient therapy and usually a self-help program as well.

Outpatient recovery treatment is less intense than residential treatment, and services can vary based on the treatment center and the individual’s recovery goals. Generally, however, outpatient services offer some form of group counseling along with in-depth education about substance abuse. Certain outpatient programs are designed to counsel individuals who struggle with mental health problems in addition to their substance abuse issues.

Because overcoming addiction or mental health disorders can be highly challenging, many treatment centers focus on group counseling to provide a strong support network for their patients. Peer discussion plays a central role in a group counseling program, and research has found that when group therapy and individualized treatment occur together, long-term outcomes are highly positive.
